Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Publication ethics and malpractice statement must be followed. Details can be found in the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement page: http://www.iaees.org/publications/journals/nb/ethics.asp.

Manuscript Preparation

Research Articles, Review Articles and Short Communications

Manuscript Size
Research articles and short communications: are expected to present important new research results of broad significance in biological networks. Online supplementary materials are encouraged. The length of a research article or a short communication is unlimited.
Review articles: describe new developments of network biology and highlight unresolved questions and future directions. The length of a review article is unlimited.
Title Page
The title page should include the name(s) of the author(s), a concise and informative title, the affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s), and the email address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author.
Research articles and review articles should include an abstract up to 300 words. Short communications should include an abstract up to 150 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.
Manuscript should provide 4 to 10 keywords.
Text
Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word.
Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.
Acknowledgments of people, grants, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the reference list. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.
Terminology
Manuscript should use the standard mathematical notation for formulae, symbols etc. Italic for single letters that denote mathematical constants, variables, and unknown quantities. Roman/upright for numerals, operators, and punctuation, and commonly defined functions or abbreviations, e.g., sin, e or exp, log, lim, etc. Bold for vectors and matrices.
References
Cite references in the text by name and year in parentheses. For examples, (Zhang, 2007), (Zhang and Wei, 2009), (Zhang et al., 2008), etc.
The list of references should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication.
Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last names of the first author of each work.
Journal article
Zhang WJ, Zhong XQ, Liu GH. 2008. Recognizing spatial distribution patterns of grassland insects: neural network approaches. Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment, 22(2): 207-216
The names of all authors should be provided, but the usage of ¡°et al¡± in long author lists with the first three authors will also be accepted:

Tables
All tables should be numbered using Arabic numerals.
Tables should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order. For each table, please supply a table caption (title). Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the table caption. Footnotes of tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data, and included beneath the table body.
Artwork
Figure Lettering
It is suggested for using Helvetica or Arial (sans serif fonts) to add lettering. Keep lettering consistently sized throughout the final-sized artwork, usually about 2¨C3 mm (8¨C12 pt).
Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal.
Avoid effects such as shading, etc.
Do not include titles or captions within the illustrations.
Figure Numbering
All figures should be numbered using Arabic numerals. They should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.
Figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters (a, b, c, etc.).
If an appendix appears in the manuscript and it contains one or more figures, continue the consecutive numbering of the main text.
Do not number the appendix figures.
Figure Captions
Each figure should have a concise caption and the captions should be included in the text file but not in the figure file.
Figure captions begin with the term Fig., followed by the figure number.
Punctuation is not permitted after the number, nor is any punctuation to be placed at the end of the caption.
Identify previously published material by showing the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the figure caption.
Figure Placement and Size
Figures are sized to fit in the column width. The figures should be 39 mm, 84 mm, 129 mm, or 174 mm wide and not higher than 234 mm.
Permissions When including figures that have already been published elsewhere, the authors must obtain permission from the copyright owner(s). Some publishers do not grant electronic rights for free and thus material from other sources should be used in such cases.
Online Supplementary Materials
Supply all supplementary material in standard electronic file formats.
The authors should include in each file the following information, such as journal name, article title, author names, affiliation and email address of the corresponding author.
To accommodate user downloads, the small-sized files are recommended.
Audio, Video, and Animations
Always use MPEG format.
Software
Software should be provided in both executable version and source codes version. Software should be packaged to .rar or .zip files.
Text and Presentations
Submit the material in PDF, .doc, or .ppt format, or software packages.
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheets should be converted to PDF if no interaction with the data is intended. However spreadsheets should be submitted as .xls files if the readers are encouraged to make their own calculations.
Multiple Files
It is permissible to collect multiple files in a .zip or .rar file.
Numbering
The text must cite the supplementary material, similar to that of figures and tables.
Refer to the supplementary files as ¡°Online material¡±, e.g., "... as shown in the animation (Online material 3)", ¡°... additional data are given in Online material 4¡±.
Name the files consecutively, e.g. ¡°Ser 1.pdf¡±, ¡°Ser 2.mpg¡±.
Captions
Supply a concise caption for each supplementary material to describe the content of the file.
Processing of Supplementary Files
Online supplementary material will be published as received from the author without any conversion, editing, or reformatting.

Perspectives

Perspectives highlight recent exciting research, but do not primarily discuss the author's own work. They may provide context for the findings within a field of network biology or explain potential disciplinary significance. Perspectives commenting on papers in Network Biology should have a larger dimension to the research and not merely be a summary of the previous researches. The length of the the Perspecitves is to be limited to a maximum of 1000 words.

Book Reviews

Book reviews present reviews of current books, multimedia, exhibitions, and films of interest to Network Biology readers. The length of a book review is to be limited to a maximum of 1000 words.

Proof Reading

The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting or conversion errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content are not allowed without the approval of the editor. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.

Archive

As one of the pre-publication steps, some articles will be archived in the archive for open comment/review, and subsequent formal publishing. An article is removed from the archive once it is formally published or charged of the serious violation of "Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement" (http://www.iaees.org/publications/journals/nb/ethics.asp) and "Author Guidelines" (http://www.iaees.org/publications/journals/nb/author-guidelines.asp).

Pre-publication and Open Review

Double blind peer review is adopted for all articles to be published. For an pre-published article online, as a final guarantee, it should be generally noted that before formal publication, a period is left for receiving comment/review from readers (open review). Comment/review to charge the serious violation of "Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement" (http://www.iaees.org/publications/journals/nb/ethics.asp) and "Author Guidelines" (http://www.iaees.org/publications/journals/nb/author-guidelines.asp) of the pre-published article will be carefully examined and the article will be retreated from the formal publication if the fact in comment/review is confirmed. Comment/review for suggesting substantial revisions on the article will be sent to the authors to revise their article before formal publication. Comment/review continues after an article has been formally published.

Article Processing Charge (APC) and Article Submission Charge (ASC)

Both APC and ASC are free for all authors.
